While recording live performances of classical musicians, I was amazed at how quickly the process can take place from tracking all the way through the final mix. A well trained musician has such command over their instrument whether it’s a piano, violin, their voice, etc., that the performance and tone don’t really need much of anything when recording and mixing. In fact, in one session the artist did a punch-in, and because the punch-in’s performance was so dead on, I can’t even catch where it occurred without going back to the project and looking at the automation! So when these sessions all ended ahead of schedule and they’d all ask, “so that’s it?” “Yes, that’s it,” we’d reply. Remember, all the technology in the world cannot replace a killer performance.
